Vendhaya Kali (in Tamil) / Fenugreek Halwa is tasty as well as healthy dish. This has lot of health benefits. Generally, you should take it in empty stomach to get the full benefit of the fenugreek.

This is one of the best home remedy for people who get painful menstrual cramps. You might feel difficult to make it on you own on such painful days.

Instead, you can make 1 or 2 days before menstrual days and refrigerate. Then start having small portions each day for about 3 days. This will help ease the pain.

Health Benefits of Vendhaya kali

Our elders suggest us to have this dish for the following reasons:

  1. Fenugreek is the natural coolent. So, it is a summer friendly food. It helps to cool the body.
  2. It aids in digestion and controls the diarrhea that’s caused due to heat.
  3. Postnatal diet – A month after delivery of baby, this is given for new moms as it helps in breastmilk secretion.
  4. Very good remedy for menstrual cramps. So, this is suggested to overcome the menstrual pain.
  5. It can help in diabetic management.
  6. It cures ulcer problems.

Required Ingredients for vendhaya kali recipe:

Fenugreek / Vendhayam / Methi – 2 tbsp
Idly rice – 1 tbsp
Urad dal / Uluthamparuppu – 2 tsp
Sesame oil / Nallennai – 75 ml
Palm sugar / Karupatti – 200g, you can adjust as per your taste.

Vendhaya kali preparation Method:

  • Soak the rice, urad dal and fenugreek seeds need to be soaked at least for 3 hours. As we generally eat this as first food in the morning in empty stomach, I usually soak it overnight.
  • Grind the soaked ingredients in a mixer grinder.
  • Mix the jaggery in the 1/2 cup water.
  • Heat Kadai and add 50 ml of sesame oil.
  • Once oil is heated, add ground wet flour in the oil slowly to avoid oil splattering.
  • Mix slowly and continuously until the flour gets mixed well in the oil.
  • After its half cooked, add jaggery water little by little and stir continuously. It takes 10 to 15 mins to get this cooked.
  • The vendhaya kali’s color will change similar to jaggery color.
  • Now add the remaining sesame oil and stir continuously.
  • The halwa / Kali should not be sticky with the kadai. At this stage, you can switch of the flame.
  • Change to serving plate and enjoy the heathy sweet dish.
