Ponnanganni keerai benefits and how to use it effectively to get the full benefits.

Pon + aam + Kan + nee = Pannanganni in Tamil, Ponnaganti koora in Telugu and Sessile Joyweed (Alternanthera sessilis) in English.

There are 2 types of ponnanganni keerai.

  • Green plant is nattu ponnanganni – native indian plant.
  • Red colored plant is “Seemai ponnanganni”, meaning it is from foriegn land.

Ponnanganni keerai is rich in iron, calcium, phosporous, protien, Vitamin A, B and C.
It is believed the “nattu ponnanganni” the green one is more beneficial than its red variety.

We can make many dishes with ponnanganni keerai such as kadaiyal, poriyal, soup, rasam and juice are few of them.

Ponnanganni keerai is known for its medicinal benefits. It can be beneficial for eye sight and can give you golden skin.

In Tamil, Sithar Padal mentioned about ponnanganni keerai for its medicinal benefits as follows:

காசம் புகைச்சல் கருவிழிநோய் வாதமனல்
கூசும் பீலீகம் குதாங்குர நோய் பேசி வையால்
என்னாங் காணிப்படிவம் எமம் செப்ப லென்னைப்
பொன்னாங்கண்ணிக் கொடியைப் போற்று.

The meaning of this writing is: praise the benefits of this ponnanganni plant which resolves asthma, cough, eye problems, nerve joint issues and heat related issues.

Asthma cure

For prolonged cough and asthma, this leaves can be best food remedy. Grind garlic cloves, 1/2 cup leaves along with 1 cup water. You should drink this juice for about 2 months to see good results.

Eyesight improvement

Ponnanganni keerai is best known for its effectiveness on eye treatments.

It is said that if you add cooked green leaves in daily diet or if you consume 2 tsp of this leaves paste in empty stomach every morning for about 1 to 2 months period, you will start to see good improvements in eyesight.

For any inflammation and redness in eyes, the leaves paste can be applied on eyelids. This is said to help cure the inflammation.

Its flowers are considered effective in treating night blindness. You can do the following with its flowers.

  • Apply its flowers paste on eyelid
  • Steam the flowers and eat
  • Cook green leaves and flowers along with butter and consume.

Ponnanganni carrot juice for eyesight improvement

Grind 1/2 cup of ponnanganni keerai with 1/2 cup of water and extract the juice. Same way, grind a small carrot with 1/2 cup water and extract the juice. Drink this juices mix everyday for a month to start seeing improvement in eyesight.

Body Heat Reduction

This greens can help reduce the body heat. You can include in the regular diet at least once in a week.
We can make thailam, by boiling its extract with coconut oil or sesame oil. Apply this oil in head and massage well. Then take head bath with shampoo. This will reduce the body heat. The redness in eyes thats caused due to heat will be cured.

The same coconut oil can be used as hair oil too.

For weight loss

The ponnanganni keerai can help with weight loss. Cook the keerai with salt and pepper and have it. This will help to reduce the body weight.

For Weight gain

The same ponnanganni helps in weight gain diet as well. Cook the green leaves with mashed toor dal and ghee. Season with mustard, cumin, small onions, red chilli, hing, turmeric and curry leaves. This lentil and ponnanganni green leaves preparation aids in weight gain.

Home remedy for Piles

Ponnanganni is believed to cure piles as well.

Extract ponnanganni leaves juice and equal amount of radish juice. Mix together. Have 2 tbsp of this mix 2 times a day morning and evening. Keep this as routine in regular diet until you see improvement in piles problem.

For Pregnancy and breastfeeding mothers

Pregnant and breastfeeding women need more iron and calcium. Including this keerai in regular diet will be beneficial. For breastmilk secretion, the green leaves cooked with some butter can be good. You can have it as it is or with some rice.

Other benefits of Ponnanganni Keerai

As it is rich in calcium, it is good for bone health.

The vitamins and minerals in it helps to boost your energy levels.

It helps to get rid of bad breath when included in diet regularly.

We should include ponnanganni green leaves at least once weekly to get its benefits. If not this, adding any kind of green leaves once a week will be beneficial for your body.
