Onion Tomato Chutney – How to make tasty tomato chutney for idly dosa

Onion-tomato chutney is very tasty side dish for Idly and Dosa. This can be prepared quickly with less ingredients. Lot of variations are possible in this chutney. So you can experiment different flavors to relish you taste buds.

Here I show the basic onion-tomato chutney in which you can try different flavors like garlic, coriander leaves, mint leaves, basil leaves, curry leaves or any other leaves of your choice.

The tomatoes tangy makes this chutney a perfect combo for plain idlys and variety of Dosas.

Onion Tomato Chutney

Onion-tomato chutney is very tasty side dish for Idly and Dosa. This can be prepared quickly.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 handful curry leaves
  • 2 Dried Red chilli
  • 1 Kashmiri green chilli less spicy chilly
  • 1 Big onion roughly chopped
  • 1 Big tomato finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp Salt as required

Instructions
 

  • Heat the kadai and add oil. Once oil is heated, add curry leaves, red chilli and green chilli. Then saute for a minute
  • Add chopped onions and required salt. Saute until it turns brown.
  • Add chopped tomatoes and saute until it turns soft and then turn off the heat.
  • Let it cool for 5 minutes.
  • Transfer to mixer jar and grind more than coarse like paste, but not too fine paste.
  • Transfer to serving bowl. Onion-Tomato chutney is ready. Enjoy with your favorite idly or Dosa.

Notes

When sautéing, the onion should be nicely sauted till its brown to get the nice onion flavor. 
While grinding the chutney, it should be ground little more than coarse and form paste.
For this chutney, there is no need to add water as tomato itself is creamy. But in case if you leave it on heat for more time, it may become dry. If it becomes dry, then you can add 1 or 2 tbsp of water and adjust the consistency.
