Balloon vine plant is known as mudakathan keerai. Its original Tamil name is “Mudakku Otraan” or “Mudakku Atraan”. It is given this name as it cures “Mudakku vadham”. All joint related issues such as rheumatoid arthritis can be cured / prevented by including this plant in regular diet.
Tamilians are using this medicinal plant for ages now. Mudakathan keerai is in use from olden days. Even in Tholkappiyam its flower “Ulingai” was mentioned in Ulingai Thinai in Tamil.
It is one of the very popular green leaves and widely used in tamil nadu for its medicinal benefits.
You can use from its root to flower, as every part of this plant is having medicinal properties.
How to clean balloon vine / Mudakathan keerai
Mudakathan keerai is a climbing plant. As its fruit comes up fluffy like balloon, it is called as balloon vine plant. All of its part are used in culinary.
To make chutney, dosa, curry, you can use mudakathan keerai leaves, fruits and flowers.
Just pluck out the leaves, fruits, and flowers from its stem.

Wash them well in the running tap water. Drain the water and then you can cook as the recipe calls.
You can store it in refrigerator for later use too. It will stay fresh for a week time when stored well without water content.

To prepare rasam / soup, we can use its stem as well along with other parts. Chop the stems and add it in soups and boil. We can remove the stems while serving the rasam / soup.
We can make mudakathan keerai dosai, chutney, mudakathan keerai puli kulambu and mudakathan keerai soup.
As such, these leaves have mild bitter taste when you eat plain leaves. But when prepared with all spices, all these dishes tastes so good.

Rheumatoid arthritis cure:
Make paste of this balloon wine leaves and have 1 tsp in the morning in empty stomach. If your joint pain is in the starting stage, it will get cured with few days of consumption.
But, if you have proloned joint pain, you must have this paste for 40 days in morning in empty stomach. In siddha medicine, this is being used as the main medicine for rheumatoid arthritis.
It is mentioned in the book “sitha maruthuva puthaiyal” by Guruparan.
Balloon vine leaves paste is mixed in castor oil and wrapped around the affected joints like external POP for joint issues.
Skin diseases cure:
The external applicaton of balloon wine leaves paste on the skin can help the dermatological issues such as karappan and scabies.
Gastric Relief
The mudakkathan keerai plant’s stem, leaves, flower and fruit can be used to relieve gastric problems.
We can make rasam / soup using all these parts and have 2 or 3 times in a week.
Relieves constipation
People with rheumatoid arthritis are likely to suffer from constipation due to the lack of normal bodily functions.
Mudakathan keerai leaves and stem are rich in fiber. Including this keerai in regular diet could help solve the constipation issues as well.
Removes excess Uric acid
When mudakathan keerai is included in the regular diet, it may help remove the excess uric acids that are sedimented in the joints. The excess uric acid are expelled in urine.
Other benefits of Mudakathan keerai
This also helps people with Autoimmune disorder. It has anti-cancerous properties and prevents the spread of cancer cells.
Mudakkathan keerai can be taken during menopause period for 2 or 3 times in a week to reduce effect of the menopause related problems.
In olden days, the leaves paste is applied on the abdominal areas of pregnant women when they are due for delivery. This is said to aid for the normal delivery. Similarly, the same leaves paste are prepared and applied on the abdonimal areas after the delivery for the uterous to expel the waste naturally.
Mudakathan keerai helps in good nervous system functioning and to overcome anemic issues when included in the regular diet.
