I have been trying out fish curry in different styles and variations for sometime now. Fish sambar or fish curry with sambar powder is one of my try with fish curries.
If you have not tried this fish sambar curry, I recommend you should make this fish curry. It was just awesome. Though I try many, I post only the recipes which comes out well for me. So, you can take it from me that you will surely enjoy this fish curry.
You can use any fish variety. I used one of the small oily fish for this curry.
This is not promoational post. But I suggest Grandma’s brand sambar powder as I loved the curry taste with this masala. If you have any preference or like some sambar powder (any brand or home made), you can very well use that too.
Using shallots and chopping it very small makes a whole lot of difference in taste. So, I would suggest to use shallots when available, as it is tasty and healthy as well.

Notes
- Adding chopped shallots for this recipe makes whole lot of difference.
- You can adjust sambar powder as per your taste. 2 to 3 tsp sambar masala would be sufficient for medium spicy gravy.
- Further, always reduce the flame to low after the gravy started boiling.
- Finally, you can adjust the tamarind water as per your taste or based on the fish variety you use. Some fishes need more tamarind water while few require less.
